Winfield, Mo. - On Sept. 17, Winfield welcomed its cross-county rival, Elsberry-Silex, and capped off a winning week to get back to .500 on the season with a 7-0 shutout win in boys soccer action.
“It was a big boost of confidence for our team,” said first-year Warriors coach Alex Rutledge. “We went 3-0 for the week – and that’s what we wanted.
“We were 1-4 going into the week, and now we’re 4-4. That was our goal for the week.”
On the other hand, the Indians fell to 1-6 on the young season with the loss. Coach Caleb Johnson said his is young, boasting just two seniors, but feels his squad will get better as the 2021 campaign rolls along.
“We lacked a lot of energy today,” Johnson said. “Once we play (the Warriors) again, I think we’ll play them better.
“This field plays a lot bigger and faster than we’re used to, and I think that got us in the early going.”
