Winfield, Mo. - In his first season as Winfield wrestling coach, Shannon Clark is looking not just at the present state of his program, but to the future.
Clark’s goal is not just to build the varsity and junior varsity programs, but to create a youth wrestling program in Winfield as a feeder to those programs for long-term success.
However, for 2021-2022, Clark said he has a good young base to start with. Senior Xavier Baldwin, and sophomores Coleman Croghan, David Bruno and Evan Baden could be potential state qualifiers for the Warriors.
“We’re fortunate to have two seniors on varsity, and the rest are sophomores,” said Clark, who takes over for Chris Sanders, who left after one season. “We have a good young group.
“As a coach, you still have to get down to the beginner level. We have a few kids who have never wrestled before – but they’re working hard.”
Clark said his ambitious program-building strategy begins with the current group, but he believes this unit can be a winner sooner than later.
“I told myself if I had any goal, I want to be able to go to a tournament and be able to participate in every weight class,” Clark said. “I think we have the kids to do it this year – and that’s the first time that’s happened in a while.”
