The 18th annual 4-H Day With The Cardinals was recently held at Busch Stadium, with 1,766 4-H members in attendance from Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky.

The highlight of the game was the opening ceremony.

The 4-H members reciting the pledge were Deana Raasch from Foley and Mason Junker-Schrumpf from Illinois. Deana is the 16-year-old daughter of Leonard and Tracy Raasch.

Through a raffle, members had the chance to throw out the first pitch.  Winners included 5-year-old Spencer Carroz from Troy, and Adam Burns from Illinois.

Spencer is the son of Jeremy and Jaime Carroz, and the grandson of Jay and Rhonda Shafer and Tom and Janet Hurley, all of Troy, and Stan and Mary Carroz of Montgomery City, and the great-grandson of Richard Shafer of Troy.

Through the years, the raffle has raised over $80,000 to support programming in Illinois and provide college scholarships for members in Missouri.

“This is a great way to promote 4-H in the St. Louis area,” said Shafer, who is a 4-H Youth Specialist and coordinator of the event. “It’s awesome to see all the 4-H clovers around the stadium.”
