The 50 Missouri youth that toured the United States and beyond.

Fifty Missouri 4-H teens – including Lincoln County delegates Sydney Burkemper and Sophie Sullivan – recently embarked upon the thirteenth annual Missouri 4-H Equine tour with destinations in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Canada, Michigan and Ohio.

The tour gained insight into the equine collegiate programs at several universities.  Some of the careers explored included the rodeo industry, equine-assisted therapy, professional horse show management, farm and barn management, equine dentistry and equine welfare advocacy. Participants had the opportunity to appreciate the rare breeds of Lipizzans and Haflingers and learn about their survival through WWII. Delegates also enjoyed an evening in Ontario learning about 4-H programs in Canada. A highlight for the group was traveling by ferry to the non-motorized Mackinaw Island and seeing the horse-drawn carriages.

Through the years, the equine tour has helped over 600 4-H members gain insight into possible careers in the horse industry.
