Just three games into the season things are not looking too bright for the Elsberry’s boys basketball team as they are winless going into December.
During the week of Thanksgiving break the team traveled to Mexico to take on the Cadets at Mexico Military Academy, only to return home with a 49-36 loss. Their final game before break came as the Indians hosted the Warrenton Warriors, where once again they were handed a loss, 71-53.
Against MMA the Indians competed in every quarter, but were never able to hit their stride and take control of the game.
After one quarter Elsberry trailed by just one point, 11-10. In the second quarter the Indians could only muster up six points of offense, finding themselves down 22-16 at halftime.
Although the team was able to score 20 points in the final two quarters, including two three point baskets in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to overcome MMA lead dropping their second game of the season.
The only Indian scoring in double figures was Bo Henry with 11 points.
Going into the game against the Warriors Coach Caleb Johnson looked to his freshmen Kaden Kinsler and Eli Gladney for some stability.
Things looked hopeful in the first quarter as Gladney was able to score six of the teams 14 points. The Indians tallied another 14 points in the second quarter, eight of which were scored by Junior Gabre Hill. Elsberry trailed by just seven, 35-29 at halftime.
The game went downhill after the intermission as the Indians could only score eight points, letting the visiting Warriors take a 12 point lead at the end of the third quarter. Despite scoring 17 points in the final eight minutes of the game, it wasn’t enough to top Warrenton falling 71-53.
Hill and Gladney finished the game in double figures, 21 and 15, respectively.
Elsberry competes in the Tip-Off Classic at Winfield this week.
