(Back, l-r): Gwen Gilbert (Manager), Julia Grateke, Sara Grateke, Maddy Hall and  Kate Kientzy.

The Silex Lady Owls will be relying on the leadership of their three seniors for the 2020-2021 season.

Last year the Lady Owls finished with a record of 6-18.

“The girls were able to make drastic improvements throughout the season last year.  I feel like our record does not justify how competitive we really were,” said Coach Sabrina O’Heron.

Some of their major accomplishments in the regular season were winning consolation in both the Clopton Basketball tournament and the Bowling Green tournament.

O’Heron’s seniors are Lexi Plackemeier, Julia Grateke and Krista Baker.

She describes her seniors.

• Lexi Plackemeier: “Lexi is a great all around athlete.  She was our leader last year in almost every category.  She creates chaos for other teams defensively and is an offensive threat anywhere in the half court.  She is very strong under the basket and has a great touch from behind the three point line.  Lexi is an extremely hard worker, and she is one of those players that can make everyone else around her better.”

• Julia Grateke: “You didn’t get to see much from her last season due to rehabbing a knee injury, but I expect to see some very good things from her this year.  She does a good job of picking her teammates up.  Julia has a beautiful three point shot and is always a threat to score there.”

• Krista Baker: “She gives it everything she has.  She works very hard.  She is the type of player who will put her team first.  She does what it takes to win.”

“I am very lucky to have these three girls as my senior leaders.  Overall, they all demonstrate great leadership ability.  They are very selfless players.  They lead by example and always come ready to work.  They help motivate all the girls around them.  The team looks up to each one of them,” said O’Heron.

Like last season, the Lady Owls will be a young team.

“We have four total upperclassmen.  With that being said, we are another year older, which hopefully means fewer mistakes due to inexperience.  These girls work hard.  They are constantly wanting to learn and improve.  This season we will work on competing in every game we play.  We have to focus on doing all the little things right.  This should be a very exciting season for the Silex Lady Owls,” said O’Heron.

O’Heron says her team is going to be very aggressive with their athletic ability and competitiveness.

“We are a team that likes to be around one another and team chemistry is so important to success.  These girls have self discipline and that  helps them to believe in themselves and each other.  I feel like they are going to continue to get better and very fun to watch grow,” said O’Heron.

She is confident and excited about this season.

“I know we are very young still, but if nothing else, that has just motivated the girls.  They want to be successful and they have put in a lot of work this off-season.  They are getting so much better at adapting to changes and making winning an attitude.  They have always been competitors, but now they are looking at doing more than competing and improving.  We want to win,” said O’Heron.
