Troy, Mo. – Very few people expected a super-competitive contest when Troy Buchanan opened the Class 6 District 2 playoffs against a winless Hazelwood West team.
Their predictions were more correct than they ever expected.
As Halloween approached Lincoln County, it was a “Nightmare on Old Cap Au Gris Road” for the Wildcats, as it was complete domination on both sides of the ball by the Trojans in a 70-0 beating in football action Friday night.
Top-seeded Troy Buchanan (8-2) will next face De Smet, 56-35 road victors over Ritenour on Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Whether it was Troy’s starters, who played just three series in the first quarter, or the Trojan reserves, Hazelwood West could do nothing on offense against a hard-hitting and inspired defense.
The Wildcats (0-10) didn’t cross midfield for the first time until late in the first half – and were held to just 144 total yards for the game.
Troy’s smothering defense resulting in great field position for their offense all night – as the Trojans consistently began drives in Wildcat territory – and scored on almost every one of them, carrying a 56-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Despite the fact it was a first-round playoff game, it almost seemed like a scrimmage for the Trojans offensively. Ten different players found the end zone for Troy, as the team’s youth movement played the rest of the game from the midpoint of the first quarter on.
