On Sunday, June 30 the Reid Cemetery Association held a dedication service of a stone honoring the slaves buried in the Reid Cemetery who were owned by the Reid families and neighbors.
Taking part in the service were prayers given by Dr. Brewer of the Wesley United Methodist Church and Rev. Conrad Cheatham of the AR Presbyterian Church at Mt. Zion and Elsberry. Among those offering comments were Rev. Mary Garrett of the Begin Again Reformation Ministries, Sarah Reid, a direct descendant of slave holders and Melba Houston, President of the Reid Cemetery Association.
The inscription read: “In memory of those enslaved individuals buried here whose names are known only to God. Let light perpetually shine upon them and may they rest in peace. Erected 2019.”
