Frances Teresa (Maher) Newberry, 95, of Troy, Missouri passed away peacefully with family present on September 23, 2020. She was born on November 1, 1924 in Warwick, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late John J. and Margaret I. (McElroy) Maher. She was the oldest of five children.
Frances spent her formative years in Rhode Island where she attended parochial and public schools. During World War II she worked as a Red Cross volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Providence R.I. She married William E. Newberry on February 16, 1946 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Warwick, R.I. They moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Ed attended Veterinary School at Kansas State University. In 1952 they moved to Troy, MO where Ed practiced Veterinary Medicine and Frances established a home for the family. She worked at the Vet Clinic from 1966 to 1983 when she and Ed retired.
Frances was a devoted Catholic, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Troy, MO from 1952 until her passing. She was a member of the St. Ann Sodality of Sacred Heart. Also a member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary, the Evangeline Literacy Club, the Anna Day Club and Garden Club of Troy. In her later years she did volunteer work as a reading buddy at Sacred Heart School. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home, gardening, music, traveling, painting, playing bridge and pinochle. She was involved with scouts and 4-H when her children were young.
Frances is survived by her children: J. Stephen Newberry (Vicki) of Troy, MO, Michael E. Newberry (Cheri) of Katy, TX, Lynn L. Newberry Powell (Rex) of Stroudsburg, PA, Catherine A. Newberry of Springfield, MO and Christopher W. Newberry (Sherri) of Dexter, MO. She leaves behind eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. She is also survived by two sisters: Margaret A. Maher Moura and Mary L. Maher Healey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed Newberry and brothers: John and Jim Maher.
Frances was a good mother, wife, sister and friend. Her children and grandchildren filled her life with wonder and joy. She will be missed by all.
Family and friends will be received from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at KEMPER-MILLARD-KEIM Family Funeral Chapel, located at 351 Monroe Street Troy, MO 63379. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church located at 100 Thompson Drive Troy, MO 63379. Officiating the mass will be Father Mike Lydon. Private burial will be held at a later date at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Troy, MO.
