WINFIELD - In what was a very busy evening May 11, Winfield’s Board of Aldermen covered several items during its monthly meeting, including a state-mandated audit the city is preparing for.
Mayor Dawn Garver told the board members the audit would cost around $12,000, an amount that could possibly drain Winfield’s coffers.
Garver then suggested the city cancel it remaining events for 2023, including its Fall Festival and the Christmas-themed Light Up Winfield, in order to focus on the audit financially, with the sole intent on resuming the events in 2024.
The measure passed, 3-1, with Board President Nicole Hanson as the lone “no” vote.
In other business, Winfield’s board members poured through several lengthy ordinances among their regular business brought to them by the city’s Planning and Zoning Committee.
The board unanimously approved an ordinance for the zoning of medical marijuana facilities in the city, even though Winfield will not be able to receive taxes from those facilities, due to voters striking down Proposition “M” in April’s municipal elections.
The board also approved ordinances defining what a recreational vehicle and trailers are in the city, and to rezone commercial properties on 280 West Avenue and 115 East Avenue as residential properties.
The board unanimous
amending the design standards for off-street parking in Winfield. However, when it came to approving an ordinance for what actually defined what those vehicles and dwellings were, it ran into some difficulties.
There were conflicts over whether or not there were existing ordinances covering the subject, and if the board was passing a needless ordinance because it hadn’t researched its past books, or if those books had gotten lost.
The board voted to table the measure to research those past ordinances.
The board also unanimously approved a pair of public works projects, a concrete project to repair street creep on Aaron Court, and another to replace an aging and busted water pipe at McLean Creek and East Cherry Street.
