Winfield, Mo. - The GSEM (Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri) organization has announced that Macy Beckemeier, a student of Winfield High School, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award.
According to a press release from the GSEM, “This young change-maker [Beckemeier] demonstrated extraordinary leadership through a measurable and sustainable community service project,” to win the award.
The press release elucidates further; “Beckemeier used her passion for giving back to those around the globe to earn the Gold Award. [She] held a donation drive to collect toothbrushes, soap, clothes and toys.” After gathering the resources, Beckemeier (along with a team of volunteers) packed 400 shoeboxes worth of items and mailed them to children in underprivileged communities around the world.
Furthermore, Beckemeier created gospel-themed coloring books, which she placed in every package. Her efforts were assisted by her church, which intends to collect donations annually and repeat the good-will project, according to the GSEM.
The Girl Scouts organization Gold Award adult volunteer guide states, “Each girl must complete two senior or ambassador journeys or [complete one of either] and have earned a Girl Scout Silver award—a minimum of 80 hours is suggested to complete the steps to earn the [award].” The community service project must (among other things) “make a lasting difference in a community, include provisions to ensure sustainability, and inspire others;” all of which Beckemeier’s project accomplished.
Beckemeier, along with other Gold Award Girl Scouts, were recognized for their social contributions at Maryville University in June.
