In honor of the upcoming Memorial Day, the Elsberry Historic Preservation Society will be placing a wreath on Representative Clarence Cannon’s grave in the Elsberry City Cemetery on Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony that will honor the legacy of such an influential person from the Elsberry community.
Cannon, an Elsberry native, served as a U.S. Representative from 1923 until his death in 1964. He served as Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee from 1941 until 1964, except for four years when Republicans had control of the House. He was an expert on parliamentary procedure, and was parliamentarian of the Democratic National Convention from 1920 until 1960.
