A $2 million settlement is expected to be reached in Russell Faria’s civil suit. The suit was filed after Russell was acquitted of his wife’s murder in 2015, and was against several parties involved in the investigation of that crime.

Russell was convicted of the murder of Betsy Faria in 2013, and after a judge found him not guilty of that crime two years later, Russell would file a lawsuit against former Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Leah Chaney (formerly Askey) and three investigators that were involved with the case.

Chaney and Lincoln County were dismissed from the suit back in September 2019.

Joel Schwartz, one of Russell’s attorney’s, said the settlement has been agreed to, and should be finalized shortly.

“Not withstanding the fact that he [Russell Faria] had to spend a significant time in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, he’s very happy with the outcome at this point,” Schwartz said.

The settlement does not admit to any wrongdoing by the investigators.

“To be clear and to be fair, there’s no admission of liability on the part of anybody in the settlement,” Schwartz said.
