Shop Small

“Black Friday” is practically a national holiday anymore and “Cyber Monday” is increasingly observed by the U.S. consumer.

However, there is a day in between these two shopping extravaganzas that’s been building steam since 2010: “Small Business Saturday.”

The “shop small” event was created by American Express as an initiative to highlight and give support to retail small business owners across the U.S.  The reason is simple:  small businesses are good for the communities they live in.  Research shows that $.67 of every dollar spent in a retail small business goes back to the community it’s in through payroll, taxes, and local donations.  Afterall, when was the last time Amazon sponsored your child’s little league team?

To show their support for their member retail small businesses the Elsberry Community Growth Association is adding an incentive to Elsberry shoppers to spend their money at participating member businesses on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30 and the entire week preceding (Nov. 25-30):  a $300 cash prize

Participating ECGA businesses will have a poster in their storefront window and shoppers will get a shop small sticker for every purchase of at least $15 they make.

These stickers will go on a shop small score card that has six blanks to fill.  On the backside of the cards is a place for the shopper to put their name and phone number.  Once they have completed their scorecard, they can place it in the drop box at Elsberry City Hall.  All cards are due by the morning of Dec. 2.  The winner will be announced that Wednesday on a Facebook Live video on the ECGA’s Facebook page.

Participating ECGA members are: Berni’s Pizza, Cadillac Bill’s, Elsberry Animal Hospital, Elsberry Hardware, Elsberry Pharmacy, Forrest Keeling Nursery, Graphic Graphics (home-based), Hook & Taylor, IGA, Jackson’s Automotive, Juliet’s Salon & Tanning, Proven Automotive, Rick Wood’s Repair, Roe’s Country Store, Shooter’s Saloon and The Pickle Barrel.
