One place Memorial Day was celebrated in Lincoln County was at the Troy Elks Lodge. Veterans packed out the lodge and were served fried chicken by Troy Buchanan High School Football players.
“Memorial Day is definitely more than barbecues and picnics,” veteran Gene Wellinghoff said. “Memorial Day is remembering those of my fellow soldiers who just didn’t come home. I was lucky to come home and they weren’t and that weighs heavy on my heart sometimes.”
Veteran Zip Underwood of Hawk Point said, “Memorial Day means quite a lot to me because my father was killed in World War II on the 49th day after D-Day and I go out to his grave once a year during Memorial Day.” Memorial Day, as one vet pointed out, isn’t for the living.
It is for the people that sacrificed their lives so Americans could be free.
