Sugar Grove Growers of Troy celebrated its 40th birthday on Saturday June 22 with an abundance of activities, classes and downright good old-fashioned fun.
Sugar Grove Growers is a family business that was started in 1979 by Bill and Ellyn Theobald.
They originally started out with a small roadside cart and through the years it has grown and grown, the current building having been built in1987.
Now, Bill and Ellyn’s son Bob has taken the reigns as owner.
“We are still doing the same things that made us successful, growing from our farm,” Bob said.
They grow over 3,000 tomatoes, over 1,000 pepper plants along with cucumbers – some of which become pickles – zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins and chrysanthemums in the fall.
Bob stated that Sugar Grove would have homegrown tomatoes, “by the truckload,” this summer.
“We are very seasonal,” Bob said. “In the spring, we have 10,000 square feet of greenhouse so we do bedding plants, annuals and some perennials, a lot of hanging baskets. In the summer we do homegrown produce. In the winter time, we turn this place into a chocolate store.”
During the winter, Sugar Grove Growers makes a transition from home grown produce to homemade chocolate delicacies, making things such as chocolate turtles, peanut clusters, heavenly hash, peanut butter heavenly hash, pecan clusters, candy trays and gift baskets.
Other than the vast majority of locally-grown crops that Sugar Grove grows and sells, there are also procured things such as Amish jams, woven baskets and teas.
The events at Sugar Grove included a customer appreciation lunch, a Q & A with master gardeners on plant care, a class, taught by Bob’s wife Alana on creating mini flower arrangements with common garden flowers, a balloon animal artist, a kids’ watermelon eating contest, an adults corn shucking contest and a mini cooking class that offered tips for making hydrating more fun – infused water.
Another unique feature of Sugar Grove is a co-working space upstairs with high speed Internet for people who need a place to work or when people need or want to get out of the office.
