St. Charles - Olivia Howard, choir director at Francis Howell Middle School, was selected as the 2022-23 District Teacher of the Year for the Francis Howell School District.
FHMS Principal Dr. Kirsteen James said the community is proud of Mrs. Howard for leading an incredible choir program, inspiring musicians daily, and being the heart of character, climate and culture at FHMS.
“Mrs. Howard works tirelessly to bring our students, staff and families together through music and fine arts, and also leads our community wide character initiative,” said Dr. James. “Her initiatives have a positive impact on our climate and culture through relationships, recognition and celebrations.
It is truly an honor to recognize and celebrate Mrs. Olivia Howard.”
Howard began her teaching career 16 years ago as a music teacher in the Festus School District. She followed her heart and continued to teach music classes for another five years in the Lincoln County School District. She joined FHSD as the Director of Choral Activities in 2012.
Howard has been helping middle school students at FHMS find their voice for more than a decade and she says she loves to see every student reach their full potential - both academically and musically. Her greatest accomplishment will always be her students’ reflection of their time spent in her classroom.
“A student wrote that they would like me to know how grateful they are for me, with how much time and effort I put into my job,” said Howard. “That I have created such a wonderful, supportive classroom, always smiling for my students, thanked me and said they loved me.
“These are the moments that confirm my calling to be a teacher.”
After graduating from Troy Buchanan High School, Howard completed a master’s degree in Music Teacher Education at Lindenwood University in 2019. She took what she learned at Lindenwood University back to FHSD, where she implemented the CharacterStrong curriculum to nurture a welcoming environment for the school community.
Character dares, student recognition and service learning activities are led by a student group founded by Howard.
Because of her leadership, all five FHSD middle schools are now utilizing the CharacterStrong curriculum.
Howard will be honored, along with each school’s Teacher of the Year and Howell of Fame Award winners, at the annual Howell of Fame Awards Ceremony on May 15.
