It is official, the Elsberry R-II Board of Education has not only voted in favor of the four day week for the schools next year, but the official school calendar is available.

The 2020-2021 school year will begin on Aug. 25 with the final day scheduled on May 26, 2021.  The school day will begin at 7:45 a.m. and finish at 3:35 p.m.

Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year the number of days in the school year that needed to be reported to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) changed from number of days to number of hours. Currently DESE requires 1044 hours, next year the calendar consists of 1,093 hours (up from 1080 hours this year), which allows for 49 hours built in for snow days.

For the upcoming school year the upper grades, 7-12, will have class periods that will be 57 minutes each, a 21 minute advisory period that will now be at the end of the day, and 24 minutes for lunch. For the most part the school week will be Tuesday through Friday, with the exception being the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks where school will be in session on Monday and Tuesday of those weeks.

Currently, teacher professional development time is done on Wednesday’s when students are dismissed at 2 p.m. and a couple designated days a year.   Beginning with the new school year teachers and staff will now be required to be at school one Monday a month that is designated on the calendar for professional development.  Salaried employees are contracted for 1321 hours for the current school year, versus a total of 1322 hours for next year based on the adopted school calendar.
