Lyman Heras, junior year student at Elsberry High School, prepares for participation in EMO Conference Band practice.

Rebecca Cooper, LCRII band director, reported that around 100 students participated from various schools in the annual event.  Schools involved on the 18th included Elsberry, Wright City, North Callaway, Silex, Clopton, Louisiana, Bowling Green, Mark Twain, Van-Far, Montgomery County, and Wellsville-Middleton.

Because of the inclement weather, arrival time for the band members was delayed until 10:30.

The morning session was dedicated to the auditioning process.  Judges’ decisions about chair placements were made through individual auditions and were based on performance of memorized scales as selected by the judges and sight-reading.  The judges who served for the event were band and music teachers from across the EMO Conference area.

Following the lunch break, students gathered in the high school gym and enjoyed reading through and practicing all pieces that had been previously sent by this year’s featured clinician, Ken Hansen, director of bands at Blue Springs South High School.  Each year, a different clinician is hired so that students can have new experiences with a variety of accomplished directors.

The second day of the EMO event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 with a rehearsal followed by a concert at 6:30 p.m. at Elsberry High School.  Guests are invited to attend.
