The Autumn Season for the River Hills Farmers’ Market will begin on Sept. 19, with the group’s annual Fall Poultry Fest.
It will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Central Elevator, just west of Silex, on Highway E. The events of 2020 have greatly increased the interest in local foods and the keeping of poultry, both in the backyard – and as another venture for the family farm. Both practices have deep roots in the River Hills regions.
While not having a large number of special events on Sept. 19, there will be the opportunity to view a wide variety of heirloom poultry breeds and varieties and to meet with established breeders of such birds.
There will be a large farmers’ market, and all growers and craftspeople from throughout the region are invited. There is no admission of vendors’ fees, and the market operates on donations for its support.
A breeder from Montgomery County will be on hand displaying chickens that lay eggs with a variety of shell colors from blue to olive green to darkest brown.
From Central Missouri will be breeders of a large number of pigeons, including some of the largest that have been used for squab production.
There will be birds and small stock suitable for youth project work and laying stock of many heritage breeds.
The River Hills Market will continue at its current location on the third Saturday morning of each month through November, with the season-concluding Holiday Market.
