On May 15, the River Hills Farmer’s Market on 2244 Highway E, just outside of Silex, will join with Central Elevator of Silex as they observe their annual Poultry Party for 4-H youngsters and area poultry producers.
They will be showing a film, there will be games and a discussion on laying flock management.
The date coincides with the River Hills group’s yearly Spring Poultry Fair. It will bring together a number of poultry breeders and small stock raisers showing some of their rare and heirloom varieties of poultry and small stock. The group’s regular farmer’s market will also be held.
There are no vendor or admission fees, and informational materials will be available. These markets are open to all farm families and craftspeople.
The events of 2020 pointed up the continued importance of locally-produced food items, and the keeping of poultry to add diversity to family farm income. The rural Missouri economy was built upon butter and egg money – and the brown-shelled egg is again one of valued products of Eastern Missouri farms.
There will be fewer markets this year, as the group consolidates dates to better serve both buyers and sellers as the busy summer season unfolds. The May market will be the last of the Spring season, and the Fall season will begin on the third Saturday in August.
The market will be open from 7:30 a.m. to around noon.
The contact numbers for the group are (636) 697-3447 and (660) 998-0445.
Spend a May morning learning that there is far more to poultry keeping than the tending of a few little red hens.
